OAS uses the October to December 2026 maximum for ages 65 to 74; the 10% increase at 75 is left out. Both pensions rise with inflation. OAS is reduced by 15% of net income above $93,454 (2025), which RRSP withdrawals count toward and TFSA withdrawals do not.

How CPP and OAS change your Coast FIRE number

Once your pensions start, your portfolio only has to cover the part of your spending they don't. If you spend $50,000 a year and CPP and OAS pay $20,000, the portfolio covers $30,000: that needs $750,000 at a 4% withdrawal rate instead of $1,250,000.

If you retire before your pensions start, the portfolio also pays the bridge years in full. The calculator adds those years to what you need at retirement, then works back to today at your return after inflation. That amount is your Coast FIRE number: once you have it invested, you could stop saving for retirement.

Everything is in today's Canadian dollars. CPP is indexed to inflation each January and OAS each quarter, so the pensions stay level here.

TFSA or RRSP for Coast FIRE savings

TFSA

  • 2026 limit: $7,000. The limits from 2009 to 2026 add up to $109,000.
  • No deduction when you contribute; growth and withdrawals are tax-free.
  • Withdrawals don't affect OAS or GIS, and come back as new room the next January.

RRSP

  • 2026 limit: 18% of your 2025 earned income, up to $33,810.
  • Contributions are deductible, and growth is tax-free while it stays in the plan.
  • Withdrawals are taxed as income, so they count toward the OAS recovery tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Coast FIRE in Canada?
Coast FIRE means you have invested enough that, without adding more, growth alone should reach what you need at retirement. In Canada, CPP and OAS pay part of your spending once they start, so the amount you need is lower than a plain FIRE number of spending divided by your withdrawal rate.
How much CPP will I get?
It depends on how much and for how long you contributed. The 2026 maximum at 65 is $1,507.65 a month, and the average new pension at 65 was $877.01 in April 2026. Your own estimate is in My Service Canada Account, under "View my benefit estimates".
Should I start CPP at 60 or 70?
Starting at 60 pays 36% less for life, and waiting until 70 pays 42% more. Try both ages in the calculator: an earlier start lowers the bridge your portfolio pays before the pensions begin, and a later start lowers what it must cover for the rest of your retirement.
When does OAS start and how much is it?
From 65, or as late as 70 for up to 36% more. For October to December 2026 the maximum is $762.50 a month at 65 to 74 and $838.75 at 75 and over. With fewer than 40 years in Canada after 18 you get a partial pension (years ÷ 40), and you need at least 10 years if you live in Canada.
Does the OAS clawback affect Coast FIRE?
Only at higher incomes. If your 2025 net world income was above $93,454, you repay 15% of the amount above it from July 2026 to June 2027. RRSP withdrawals are taxed as income; TFSA withdrawals have no effect on OAS.
Should my Coast FIRE savings be in a TFSA or an RRSP?
Both grow tax-free while invested. RRSP contributions are deductible (up to 18% of last year's earned income, to $33,810 for 2026), but withdrawals are taxed. TFSA contributions are not deductible (the 2026 limit is $7,000), but withdrawals are tax-free and do not affect OAS or GIS.
