How the TSP calculator works
Each year the calculator adds your contribution and your agency's contribution, then grows the balance at your expected return. Pay grows with your raise assumption, and your contribution stops at the yearly limit.
Everything is shown in today's dollars: returns and raises are reduced by inflation, and the contribution limits are assumed to rise with inflation. That keeps the result comparable with your spending today.
The balance is a projection, not a promise. TSP funds go up and down, and the actual limits change every year.
FERS agency contributions
| You contribute | Automatic 1% | Agency match | Total going in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 1% | 0% | 1% |
| 1% | 1% | 1% | 3% |
| 2% | 1% | 2% | 5% |
| 3% | 1% | 3% | 7% |
| 4% | 1% | 3.5% | 8.5% |
| 5% or more | 1% | 4% | 10% or more |
Percentages are of basic pay. The agency matches only in pay periods when you contribute, so contribute through the whole year to get it all. Catch-up contributions can also be matched up to the 5% of pay. New employees since October 1, 2020 are enrolled at 5% automatically.
