From canada.ca, checked October 2, 2026. OAS is reviewed in January, April, July and October with the Consumer Price Index and never goes down; October to December 2026 is 1.4% above the prior quarter.

Start at 65 or wait until 70?

Waiting raises every payment for life: 0.6% for each month after 65, so 7.2% a year and 36% at 70. The cost is the payments you give up while you wait.

With a full pension, starting at 70 catches up with starting at 65 at about age 83.1, counting the 10% increase at 75 and leaving out tax and investment returns. Waiting also delays the Guaranteed Income Supplement, which does not increase when you defer, so canada.ca advises applying right away if you are eligible for it.

The OAS recovery tax

If your net world income is above the threshold, you repay 15% of the amount above it, up to your whole pension. Your income for one year sets the repayment for July of the next year to the following June.

canada.ca's example: with $100,000 of income in 2025, the excess over $93,454 is $6,546, so you repay $981.90 for July 2026 to June 2027. The threshold for 2026 income is estimated at $95,323.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is OAS per month in 2026?
For October to December 2026 the maximum is $762.50 a month at 65 to 74 and $838.75 at 75 and over. Amounts are reviewed every quarter with the Consumer Price Index; the October to December 2026 amounts are 1.4% above the prior quarter.
When should I start OAS?
You can start at 65 or wait until 70, and each month you wait adds 0.6%, up to 36% at 70. canada.ca notes there is no benefit to waiting if you are eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement or already over 70, and the GIS and Allowance do not increase when you delay.
How many years in Canada do I need for full OAS?
40 years in Canada after age 18. With fewer, you get a partial pension of years ÷ 40, as long as you have at least 10 years if you live in Canada, or 20 if you live outside Canada.
What is the OAS clawback?
The recovery tax: if your net world income is above the threshold ($93,454 for 2025), you repay 15% of the amount above it. Using canada.ca's example, $100,000 of income means repaying 15% of $6,546, or $981.90, for July 2026 to June 2027.
Is OAS taxable?
Yes. The OAS pension counts as taxable income, and it is also subject to the recovery tax at higher incomes.
