Withdrawals come out at the start of each year and the rest earns the return for the year, so the next minimum uses the new January 1 value. From 95 the factor stays at 20%.

The whole withdrawal is added to your income for the year; withholding is only a prepayment, and you may owe more or get some back when you file. A direct transfer to a RRIF or an annuity has no tax withheld.

How the RRIF minimum is calculated

Each year you have to take at least the minimum amount out of a RRIF. It is the fund's fair market value at the start of the year times a prescribed factor for your age in whole years at the start of that year. You can always take more, but not less.

  • Under 71: the factor is 1 divided by (90 minus your age), so 4.00% at 65 and 5.00% at 70.
  • 71 and older: the factor comes from the table in section 7308(4) of the Income Tax Regulations, from 5.28% at 71 up to 20% at 95 and every year after.
  • First year: the minimum is nil for the year the RRIF is set up. Payments are required from the next year.
  • Younger spouse: you can base the minimum on your spouse's or common-law partner's age instead, if you elect it before the first payment. The election cannot be changed.

For example, a RRIF worth $400,000 on January 1 for someone who is 72 then has a minimum of $400,000 times 0.0540, or $21,600. If the rest earns 5%, the fund starts the next year at $397,320 and the minimum at 73 is $21,972.

RRIFs set up before 1993 that have not taken in new property since 1992 use a slightly different table (section 7308(3)); from 72 on its factors are the same.

From section 7308(4) of the Income Tax Regulations (current to September 3, 2026), checked September 28, 2026. Factors under 71 are 1/(90 - age), rounded here to two decimals; the table factors are exact.

Tax withheld on RRSP and RRIF withdrawals

Lump sums in the year Outside Quebec Quebec: federal Quebec: provincial
Up to $5,000 10% 5% 14%
$5,000.01 to $15,000 20% 10% 14%
Over $15,000 30% 15% 14%

These rates apply to RRSP withdrawals and to RRIF payments above the minimum, and the rate is set by the total of such lump sums you take in the calendar year. Outside Quebec they are combined federal and provincial or territorial rates. In Quebec, CRA withholds only the federal part and Revenu Quebec's 14% applies to a single payment; for regular periodic RRIF payments above the minimum, Quebec uses its usual source-deduction method instead, which the calculator does not model. From CRA and Revenu Quebec, checked September 28, 2026.

No tax is withheld on the RRIF minimum, or on money moved directly from an RRSP to a RRIF or to buy an annuity. For non-residents of Canada, withholding is 25% unless a tax treaty reduces it. Withholding is not the final tax: the full withdrawal is income for the year and is taxed at your rates when you file.

From RRSP to RRIF

By December 31 of the year you turn 71 your RRSP has to be withdrawn, transferred to a RRIF, or used to buy an annuity. A RRIF can also be set up before then; under 71 the factor is 1/(90 - age). Earnings stay tax-free inside the RRIF and payments are taxed when you receive them; if you were 65 or older on December 31, RRIF income qualifies for the pension income amount.

Because the factor rises every year, the minimum takes a growing share of the fund through your 70s and 80s. RRIF payments are part of your income, and the OAS recovery tax is charged on net world income above a threshold, so large withdrawals can reduce your OAS. To see how much you can put into your RRSP before then, use the RRSP calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the RRIF minimum withdrawal calculated?
Multiply the RRIF's value on January 1 by the prescribed factor for your age at the start of the year. Under 71 the factor is 1 divided by (90 minus your age); from 71 it comes from a table in the Income Tax Regulations, rising from 5.28% at 71 to 20% at 95 and older. A $400,000 RRIF at 72 has a minimum of $21,600.
What is the RRIF minimum at 71 and 72?
5.28% of the January 1 value at 71 and 5.40% at 72, or $5,280 and $5,400 for every $100,000. At 65 it is 4.00% and at 80 it is 6.82%.
When do RRIF minimum withdrawals start?
In the year after the year you set up the RRIF. The minimum for the year the RRIF is entered into is nil, so a RRIF opened in the year you turn 71 has its first required payment the next year.
Can I base my RRIF minimum on my spouse's age?
Yes, if you choose it on the original RRIF application before any payment is made; it cannot be changed later. A younger spouse's age gives a lower factor: at 65 it is 4.00%, so a $400,000 RRIF has a minimum of $16,000 instead of $21,600 at 72.
Is tax withheld on RRIF withdrawals?
Not on the minimum. On anything above the minimum, the carrier withholds 10% up to $5,000, 20% from $5,000 to $15,000 and 30% over $15,000, based on the lump sums for the calendar year. In Quebec the federal rates are 5%, 10% and 15%, plus Quebec withholds 14% on a single payment above the minimum. RRIF payments are taxable income either way.
How much tax is withheld on an RRSP withdrawal?
The same lump-sum rates: a $10,000 RRSP withdrawal has $2,000 withheld outside Quebec (20%), and $2,400 in Quebec (10% federal plus 14% Quebec). The withdrawal is added to your income, so you may owe more at tax time if your marginal rate is higher.
What happens to the RRIF minimum at 95?
The factor stays at 20% of the January 1 value for every year from 95 on.
Can I put money back into a RRIF?
No. Once the RRIF is set up no more contributions can be made to it. You can transfer money in from an RRSP, another RRIF, some pension plans or an FHSA.
Can I claim the pension income amount on RRIF income?
Yes, if you were 65 or older on December 31 of the year, or if you receive the RRIF income because your spouse or common-law partner died.
